Happy new year and welcome to our first blog article of 2019. Today’s news post focuses on the 10-Year Challenge, which has spread like wildfire across the internet.
The idea of the challenge is to post a recent picture of yourself on social media alongside a picture from 10 years ago with the hashtag “#10YearChallenge.”The trend started with people looking to show how much they’ve changed over the last 10 years (a bit more flattering for some of us rather than others maybe!). Famous people who have taken part in the challenge include Madonna, actress Reese Witherspoon and comedian Jack Whitehall.
The Development of the 10-Year Challenge Trend
As the fad has gone on, it has been applied to various things, not just people. For example the Manchester Evening News used the challenge to celebrate how the city has blossomed in the last 10 years thanks to some of its newly developed areas.
The challenge hasn’t all been about positive promotion, many used the trend to point out the issues that the world is still facing. For example, professional footballer Mesut Özil posted a photo showing the effect of global warming on the ice caps with the caption “The only #10YearChallenge we should care about”.
A More Optimistic Future?
However, it’s not all doom and gloom, according to statistics from the World Bank and the UN, extreme poverty is at its lowest level ever and global life expectancy has increased. As well as this, our awareness of the responsibility we have as individuals for the world we live in has increased. This is believed to be in part thanks to television programmes such as the BBC’s Blue Planet 2. This could be one of the reasons why the world has gone from installing 16 GW (gigawatts) of renewable solar power to over 500 GW in the last 10 years.
We hope you’ll be able to look back on the last 10 years with great fondness. Perhaps you’ve achieved some live goals and ticked some things off the bucket list, or maybe you managed to quit smoking. Whatever the case may be, we hope you’re enjoying life and that the next 10 years will be just as enjoyable!
