In a week which has seen at Britain’s joint oldest men turn 111-years-old, we look at secrets shared by some of the oldest people in the world about living to 100! As well as this, a poll reveals more young people are inspired by their grandparents, than celebrities!
Younger Generations Inspired by their Grandparents
Stair lift manufacture Stannah conducted a poll with 18-39-year-olds which has revealed that two thirds of them were more inspired by their grandparents than celebrities. The survey also revealed that the younger generation had a real interest in getting to know their elders better, by spending quality time together.
The younger generations were asked to describe people of the older generations. Interesting, wise and experienced, were amongst the words used! Moreover, 88% explained they have great respect for those over 65-years-old.
Britain’s Two Oldest Men Celebrate their 111th Birthdays
Friday March 29 marked the day Britain’s two oldest men turned 111th birthdays! Alf Smith, from Perthshire, and Bob Weighton, from Hampshire, were both born on March 29, 1908. The men have never met but have been exchanging birthday cards in the last few years.
Mr Weighton revealed that the most common question people ask him is the secret to living such a long life. However, the only answer he could give was ‘to avoid dying’. We wish both Mr Smith and Mr Weighton a very happy 111th birthday!
Communities with the Highest Life Expectancy
In other news, two brothers – Nick and Dan Buettner – have made it their mission to identify communities across the world that have both the longest life expectancy, and the highest number of people living over 100.
The study showed Okinawa, Sardinia, Nicoya, Icaria and Loma Linda are the longest-living cities in the world. All of these communities have simple ways to de-stress, which is proven to reduce age-related diseases. Alongside this, the Mediterranean Diet is proven to a key success factor. Likewise, the study has suggested people who have strong connections to family and friends are more likely to remain happier and healthier for longer!
