Welcome to the Telecare Choice monthly news round-up. This month we look at a potential breakthrough in multiple sclerosis research, how the government are cracking down on fake product reviews, and look at the future of the Telecare Choice blog.
An Everyday Virus May Cause Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is a condition that impacts almost three million people around the world. It causes damage to the nervous system that can reduce mobility and affect vision. Whilst the symptoms can be treated, there is no cure. Scientists have been searching for a cause for years.
For decades, it has been theorised that the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) contributes to the development of multiple sclerosis. This is a virus that most people can expect to catch. It has been difficult to prove a connection as multiple sclerosis remains rare, whilst EBV is particularly common.
However, a recent study by Harvard University has found a connection. During this study, they found that people who had not been infected with EBV were highly unlikely to develop multiple sclerosis. After infection with EBV, the risk increased by 30 times.
It is still early days regarding the impact this research will have. However, we could be on our way to fighting the cause of multiple sclerosis.
Fake Reviews to be Illegal
In an effort to protect consumers from misleading products and services, the government is introducing plans to make fake reviews illegal. Amongst the measures being proposed is the power to find businesses for bad business practices.
These practices include paying people to write or host fake reviews for products or companies. Companies will also face repercussions if they fail to remove fake reviews; businesses will need to take steps to ensure all reviews are genuine.
These proposals come after it was found that companies in the UK were buying positive reviews. This raised concerns that consumers were being tricked into buying products that were not fit for purpose. In some cases, they were also promoting companies that were labelled as scammers.
It has also been noted that some companies are deleting negative reviews. The new legislation is intended to promote an online culture of honesty about products and services to ensure people know what they are paying for.
