In the news this week it has been announced that we have 12 years to act on climate change before the world is drastically changed. In the UK, Princess Eugenie has married Jack Brooksbank at their own Royal wedding and the longest non-stop flight has just arrived in New York.
12 years to save the world from climate change catastrophe
Climate scientists announced a report this week that showed if the world carries on the way it’s headed then we could hit tipping point sooner than originally thought. As it stands, global warming should be staying under 1.5C but we’re currently heading towards a rise of 3C which could have detrimental effects on the planet.
The shift in the planetary temperature will affect the entire planet, not only those in low-lying areas due to the risk of floods. It’s likely that coral reefs will disappear, ancient trees will no longer survive and extreme weather events will become more common. The world needs to reduce it’s CO2 emissions quickly to try and keep below the 1.5C target, this means planting millions of trees, reducing carbon emissions and taking better care of the planet around us. Kaisa Kosonen, of Greenpeace says:
Scientists might want to say, ‘act now, idiots,’ but they need to say that with facts and numbers, and they have.”
The report says that dramatic changes will need to be enforced and have recommended the following lifestyle changes:
- Buy less meal, milk, cheese and butter.
- Drive electric cars and walk or cycle short distances.
- Use trains and buses instead of planes.
- Use a washing line instead of a tumble dryer.
Princess Eugenie’s Royal Wedding
Princess Eugenie is the second child of Prince Andrew the Duke of York and sixth grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II, she is ninth in line to the throne and was married today to Jack Brooksbank at Windsor castle. Eugenie met Brooksbank in 2010 at a ski resort in Verbier which is a favourite of the royals. Eugenie wore the Queen’s Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara which was made by Boucheron in 1919.
Not unlike most royal weddings the guests included a range of famous faces including model Kate Moss and singer Robbie Williams. In the grounds were 1,200 people following proceedings who were chosen to attend by ballot. Princess Eugenie will take her husband’s name and Jack Brooksbank will remain a ‘Mr’ rather than becoming an ‘Earl’.
World’s longest flight covers more than 15,000km
Singapore Airlines has relaunched it’s service from Singapore to New York five years after it was cut for being too expensive. The flight covers more than 15,000km and takes almost 19 hours in total. The flight carried 150 passengers and 17 members of the crew and actually arrived in New York in 17.5 hours, less than expected.
Passengers on the flight have been expressing their thoughts on the flight, with one passenger saying:
The flight was effortless and very smooth. On board the consensus was that the time passed very quickly and didn’t seem like 17.5 hours.”
Singapore Airlines has explained that there is a lot of demand from customers for non-stop services as they cut travel times dramatically. The flight is currently the world’s longest flight, followed closely behind by Qatar Airways flight from Auckland to Doha.
