This week care home residents have got back on their bikes, the number of stroke deaths has halved, and the Royal Mint are selling an extremely rare coin for £100,000.
Wheels for all
Residents at a care home in Stroud were given the opportunity to ride a bike again, for the first time in decades! The charity ‘Wheels for All’ made this great experience possible, by providing adapted bicycles, which allow disabled and those less able to still enjoy riding a bike.
Marion, one resident quoted; “I haven’t ridden a bike for over 90 years.” The bikes allow two people to sit and ride. Both the staff and the residents loved this experience and said that it bought joy across the care home!
Stroke Deaths have Halved in the Last 10 Years
It has been reported that the number of older people suffering from strokes has fallen. With the number of deaths being caused by a stroke, has halved in the past 10 years. This is the result of better treatment and medical interventions. An increased number of elderly people are received interventions which control their blood pressure, such as prescribed statins.
According to the British Medical Journal study, the overall number of strokes fell by 20% between 2001 and 2010. After adjusting for age and other potential factors, stroke deaths decreased by 55% during the study period.
Despite the good news regarding older people, it turns out that people under the age of 55 are have more strokes. Of 425,000 strokes in the first decade of the 21st century, about 33,000 were in people under the age of 55. This may be caused by obesity and type 2 diabetes.
Royal Mint Selling a Rare Coin for £100,000
An ‘extremely rare’ gold coin, which is 200-years-old is being sold by the Royal Mint for £100,000. The Royal Mint said: “The George III sovereign was one of 3,574 to be struck in 1819 and there are around only 10 left in the world.”
The incredibly rare coin will be offered via a ballot on Friday 12 July, 2019. The fixed price of £100,000 has already been decided, based on the rarity and the high quality of the coin. Anybody interested in purchasing will need to apply online before Friday 28 June, 2019. All applications need to be approved, and the winner will then be selected at random. Many collectors have their fingers crossed that they will be the lucky owners of an incredible piece of history!
